Henrietta Jane Zagel

Henrietta Jane (Bonnell) Zagel, 87, of Iowa City died Sunday, June 6, 1999, at the Liberty Country Living care facility in North Liberty.

A family memorial service was held Thursday, June 17, in the meditation chapel of the Center for Faith and life at Luther College, with Campus Pastor Kay Tostengard officiating.

Music was provided by William Kuhlman, college organist. Candle lighter was Anna Kemp. Altar flowers were donated by the staff of Preus Library.

Burial was at the Summit Presbyterian Church Cemetery in rural Scott County.

Henrietta (Bonnell) Zagel was born Nov. 22, 1911, in Scott County, the daughter of Benjamin S. and Anna Van Evera Bonnell. She was baptized at Summit Presbyterian Church and raised on the family farm in the area.

After graduating from Davenport High School in 1929 and completing teacher education training and examinations at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, she taught in rural schools.

From 1934-36, she attended Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois, earning her associate of arts degree. She received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1939, graduating with the highest
distinction, at which time she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Henrietta earned her master of arts degree in 1940 in German, also from the University of Iowa. She worked as ah editorial assistant for the State Historical Society in Iowa City for many years and was a homemaker.

In 1940, she was married to Milton Zagel. They were the parents of one daughter, Jane Kemp of Decorah. They lived in Iowa City until Henrietta moved to the Liberty Country Living care facility during the fall of 1998.

Henrietta was an avid reader and played both piano and organ. She enjoyed music, art and theatre productions, and was a fan of University of Iowa basketball and football.

She belonged to the American Association of University Women, the University Club and several book review groups. She had been a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City.

Survivors include her husband, Milton of Iowa City; one daughter, Jane and Don Kemp of Decorah; granddaughter Anna Kemp of Chapel Hill, N.C.; sisters Elizabeth Keller of Davenport, Dorothy and Russell Ziemer of Fairmont, Minn., and Elaine Hamilton of LeClaire; a brother John and Phyllis Bonnell of Atlanta, Ga.; and 12 nieces and nephews.
