Otilia Barta

Otilia Barta, 93, of Cresco, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 at the Evans Memorial Nursing Home in Cresco.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 11 at St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiating.

Organist was Suzanne Ollendick.

Pallbearers were Ray Bieri, George Vachta, Verdell Haakenson, Stan Kepros, Jerome Nibaur and Gary Boeke.

Honorary pallbearers were Peter Kepros, Ed Ondrashek, and William J J Weier.

Burial was at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville.

Otilia "Tillie" Barta was born August 13, 1907 in Winneshiek County near Spillville, the daughter of Frank and Barbara (Kabela) Barta.

She attended parochial schools until the eighth grade, living in the Jerico area with her brothers Frank, Emil, and Daniel Barta.

After the death of her parents, Tillie Barta made her home with her brother, Leonard Barta, in Cresco. She spent her life as a housekeeper, working for many different families.

She enjoyed baking, especially making kolaches, which she was noted for, as well as canning, gardening, and hosting people in her home, where she always had more then plenty to eat.

She was a member of Notre Dame Parish and the Altar and Rosary Societies, and also belonged to the Catholic Workman Organization.

Tillie Barta remained active until her health declined and had been wheelchair-bound since August 1996 following a fall at her home. She entered Evans Memorial Nursing Home July 14, 1999.

Surviving Tillie Barta are her two sisters, Adeline Kovarik of Cresco and Margaret Hruska of Calif., and her two brothers, Leonard and Daniel Barta of Cresco.

She is also survived by her goddaughter, Diane M. Kovarik of Cresco; niece, Hannorah Bryan of Denver, Colo; a step-niece, Sharon Stussy of Lansing; and four nephews: Clete Hruska of Mesa, Ariz.; Tom and Tim Barta of Denton, Texas, and Danny Pat Barta of Tallahassee, Fla.

Otilia "Tillie" Barta was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Barbara Barta, and brothers Julius, Edward, Frank and Emil Barta.
