Gerald Isenberger

Gerald Isenberger, 85, of Decorah, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minn.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 9 at 11 a.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church with Revs. James Glesne, Bryan Robertson and Ole Winter officiating.

Organist was Kathy Murray, and soloist Arlene Foltz sang "The Lord's Prayer" and "I Come to the Garden". The congregation sang "I Know That My Redeemer Lives".

Pallbearers were Roger Goulson, Dean Hagen, Stanley Jeffers, Vernon Olson, Obert Sacquitne and Henry Scholl.

Full military rites were provided by Helf-Hoim V.F.W. Post No. 1977, Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163 and D.A.V. Hamre-Giesen Chapter No. 8.

Burial was in Phelps Cemetery with Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah handling arrangements.

Gerald "Jerry" R. Isenberger was born June 21, 1915 in Burt, Iowa, to Ray George and Cora (Sigsbee) Isenberger.

He graduated from both Decorah High School and Luther College.

From 1937-1939 he served as a teacher in Hawkeye, Iowa, and from 1939-1945 he taught in Decorah, before entering the Service in 1945.

He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant in World War II, from June 10, 1945 to August 5, 1946, and was stationed in Washington and California.

From 1946-1949, Gerald Isenberger was a teacher and basketball coach in Decorah, and from 1949-1951, served as clerk of court.

He served as a city mail carrier at the Post Office and then a rural carrier from 1951-1984.

He was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church, where he was active as an usher and in other church activities.

Gerald Isenberger was a member of Silvercrest Golf and Country Club and square danced with the Minowa Square Dancers. He was a Boy Scout Leader, and delivered "Meals on Wheels.

In addition, Gerald Isenberger coached Legion baseball and Little League baseball, and served as a referee in basketball and football, and also was an umpire in baseball. He received the State of Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award in 1988.

Surviving are two sons and one daughter, Rollin "Ike" and Jeanne Isenberger of Decorah; Keith and Katheryn Isenberger of Golden, Colo.; and Rita Rimrodt of Edmond, 0kla., and four grandchildren.

Gerald "Jerry" R. Isenberger was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lowell; two sisters, Eleanor Brown and Virginia Patterson and one grandson, James Rimrodt.
