Elizabeth Sarah Thayer

Elizabeth Sarah Thayer, 98, of Decorah, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at her home following a short illness.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m., at the Decorah Lutheran Church, with the Revs. James Glesne and Ole Winter officiating.

Kathy Murray was the organist. Hymns included "Rock of Ages" and "How Great Thou Art".

Casket bearers were Scott Thayer, Craig Thayer, Lee Whitcher, Keith Lawver, Reece Thayer and Paul Anderson.

Interment was at Phelps Cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth (Stahl) Thayer was born March 26, 1902, near Waukon, the daughter of George and Sarah (Brooks) Stahl. She was baptized in 1908 and later confirmed Dec. 16, 1956, at Decorah Lutheran Church by the Rev. T. M. Gjellstad.

Elizabeth attended country school near Waukon.

She was united in marriage April 24, 1925, to Clarence R. Thayer and moved to Decorah. Elizabeth lived in Decorah, working several jobs at various businesses, while taking care of her family.

She enjoyed gardening, flowers and playing cards with her friends. Elizabeth was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church and the Queen Rebekah Lodge, serving as past Noble Grand.

Survivors include four daughters, Marian and Gordon Anderson of Decorah, Helen and Ken Miller of West Union, MaeAnn and Don Potter of Elma and Jeanette and Marvin Schafer of St. Charles, Minn.; four sons, William and Joyce Thayer of Fort Atkinson, Robert and Crystal Thayer of Sarasota, Fla., Ronald and Dottie Thayer of Windsor, N. J. and Dale and Nora Thayer of Clinton, Tenn.; 43 grandchildren; and many great- and great-great grandchildren.

Elizabeth Thayer was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Guy in infancy and Ralph Thayer; two daughters, Marcella Brooks and Lorraine Lawver, two grandchildren; one sister, Mary Hagensick; and five brothers, Donald, Owna, Cecil, Richard and Sid Stahl.
