Marlin "Pete" Petersburg

Marlin "Pete" Petersburg, 68, died Sunday, July.23, 2000, at his home of cancer.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 26, at 11 a.m., at Decorah Lutheran Church, with the Revs. James Glesne and Ole Winter officiating.

Casket bearers will be his sons, his grandson and Wanda Askleson.

Honorary bearers will be Judy Bartlett, Grace and Vern Billiet, Doris and Shafe Cole, Bruce and Melinda Hanson and Doug and Jerri Nelson.

Burial will be at the Phelps Cemetery with full military rites by the Helof-Holm No. 1977 V.F.W.

Visitation will be held at the French & Balik Funeral Home Tuesday, July 25, from 4-8 p.m., and at the church Wednesday, one hour before services.

Marlin was born Nov. 14, 1931, on the family farm in Joice, the son of Edwin and Mabel (Suby) Petersburg. He was baptized and confirmed at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church at Joice. He graduated from Joice High School.

Marlin married Shirley Nelson of Kensett on Dec. 22, 1953, while stationed with the United States Air Force in Kaiserlautern, Germany. He farmed in Joice for five years prior to his entering the insurance business.

During his 16 years with the Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Co., he lived in Oelwein, Charles City and Grinnell. In 1976 he purchased an insurance agency in Decorah, which later became Petersburg Insurance Agency. Marlin retired in 1995.

Marlin was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church, Elks, V.F.W. and a past president and member of Silvercrest Golf & Country Club.

He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, fishing, boating and spending time with his family and friends at his cabin in Harpers Ferry.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; four sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Diane of Decorah; Randy and Linda of Waukon, Brian and Kathy of Decorah, and Scott and Susan of Madison, Wis.; and four grandchildren, Ryan, Sarah, Megan and Alyssa, all of Decorah.

Also surviving are two brothers, James (LaVone) of Hanlontown, and Floyd (Marion) of Clear Lake; a sister, Muriel (Mrs. Oswald) Rognes of Lake Mills; and one sister-in-law, Eunice Petersburg of Lake Mills.

Marlin Petersburg was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald.
