Randall Joel Walter Stortz

Randy Stortz, 47, of Decorah, died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah of a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 1 p.m., at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Steven Jacobsen officiating.

Don DiLaura will be the soloist and will sing "On Eagle's Wings." The organist will be Diane Kvamme.

Casket bearers will be Phil Rustad, Jayme Rustad, Richard Birdsell, Larry McCabe, Larry Hageman and Stan Shimek. Nieces and nephews are honorary bearers.

Burial will be at Phelps Cemetery in Decorah. The French & Balik Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Randall Joel Walter Stortz was born March 1, 1952, in Decorah, the son of Robert and Hazel (Fretheim) Stortz. Randy attended school at North Winneshiek and graduated in 1971.

Randy worked various jobs including Ingersoll Farm Equipment in Cresco, and Camcar and Jennerjohn-Holthaus Well Drilling in Decorah. He also served in the United States Army in Fort Leonardwood, Mo.

He had been a resident at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility.

Survivors include his mother, Hazel Stortz of Decorah, and six sisters, Linda Rosen of Fridley, Minn., Jackie and Phil Rustad of Ridgeway, Marilyn and Richard Birdsell of Postville, Marsha and Larry McCabe of Cresco, Jerilyn and Larry Hageman of Decorah, and Janean and Stan Shimek of Calmar.

There are 29 nieces and nephews: Todd Bachelder, Chad Rosen, Melanie Rosen, Tammy Rosen, Jennifer Schmelzer, Ben Rustad, Jayme Rustad, Brandon McCabe, Emily McCabe, Krystle McCabe, Justin Birdsell, Jeremy Birdsell, Kari Birdsell, Cory Hageman, Kyle Hageman, Krista Hageman, Michael Hageman, Jesse Holzer, Jarad Holzer, Danny Holzer, James Shimek and Katie Shimek. There are seven great-nieces and nephews Jordon Schmelzer, Marian Schmelzer, Blake Schmelzer, Kari Anderson, Kayla Anderson, Amanda Rustad and Alexandra Rustad.

Randy Stortz was preceded in death by his father, Robert, who died Sept. 23, 1995; a nephew, Joel Bachelder; and grandparents Joel and Emma Fretheim, and Walter and Luella Stortz.
