Fred Lansing
Fred Lansing, 69, of Billings, Montana, died May 16, 2001 from cancer.
Funeral Mass was held May 21 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian.
Rev. Cletus Hawes was celebrant.
Casket bearers were Brad Brockman, Greg Lemke, Mel Klisart, Les Watts, Pete Miller, Paul Heying, Dave Camp, Norman Bohr, Dennis Hagan and Dale Knock.
Rite of Committal was held in St. Francis de Sales Cemetery. The Brockman-Hammersland American Legion Post #503 and the K of C Council #2073 provided military rites.
Fred W. Lansing was born Dec. 17, 1931, north of Ossian, the son of Frederick and Monica (Stortz) Lansing.
He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Ossian.
Fred Lansing received his education from De Sales Elementary and High School.
Following his education, he farmed on the family farm until 1951 when he began his service in the United States Marine Corps from which he was honorably discharged.
Upon his return from service in 1953, Fred Lansing worked at Chuck's Standard Service Station in Ossian until 1963.
On Nov. 21, 1955, he married Caroline Kirkestue, and the family moved to Billings, Montana, in 1963, where Fred Lansing was employed at Dunham's Standard Service.
Soon thereafter, he began his employment at Sears in West Park Plaza from 1963 until 1977, when they moved to Des Moines to open a Sears store.
In 1995, Fred and Caroline Lansing returned to Billings to retire and be closer to their children. Fred enjoyed building dollhouses and other wood crafts.
He was a member of St. Thomas of the Apostle Parish in Billings, and a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus of Ossian.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline, his daughter Julie and Rick Richmond and his son Jay and Jackie Lansing, all of Billings.
Additional survivors include two brothers, Carroll and Anita Lansing of Decorah and Robert and Rita Lansing of Ossian; five sisters: Madonna Collins of Ossian; Veronica and Paul Riniker of Cresco; Eleanor and Joseph Cody of Madison, Wis.; Victoria Lansing of Phoenix, Ariz., and Margaret Lansing of Greendale, Wis.; three sisters-in-law, Joan Lansing of Ossian, Betty and Calvin Poels and Linda and Milo Sebastian, all of Postville; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Fred W. Lansing was preceded in death by his daughter, Jenny and a son, Jack; his parents; one brother, Charles Lansing , and a sister in infancy.
