Raymond Bernard Zweibohmer

Raymond Bernard Zweibohmer, 90, of Ossian died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000 at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah after a lingering illness.

Funeral mass was held Saturday, Nov. 4 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian with Msgr. Cletus J. Hawes officiating.

Deb Scheidel was the organist and music was provided by the St. Francis Adult Choir and the congregation.

Gift carriers were Misty Johnson, Deb Huettl, Marcine Raatz and Kathy Mueller.

Casketbearers were David Bruns, Jeff Lensing, Cory Lensing, Ryan Wiltgen, Lorin Walz, Chris Lensing, Andy Lensing and Michael Zweibohmer.

Interment was at St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian. Schmitz Funeral Home of Ossian handled the arrangements.

Raymond was born the son of Fred W. and Catherine (Moellers) Zweibohmer in rural Ossian May 20, 1910.

Ray was baptized in his faith at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church on May 29, 1910 by the Rev. John Hehier. His first communion day was April 21, 1918. Archbishop James J. Keane confirmed Ray on Oct. 25, 1922. Ray obtained his education by attending De Sales School. Afterward, he went back to the farm and went to work with his parents. He also hired out as a farmhand to area farmers.

On Nov. 4, 1936, he was joined in marriage to Winifred Bengfort of Festina at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. M. J. Thiltgen.They had five children. The Zweibohmers resided and farmed in the Castalia, Luana and Postville area for 29 years.

After selling their farm, they moved to Postville and lived there for 32 years. In 1997, they moved to Ossian. Ray moved to the Ossian Senior Hospice in July of 1999 and had been residing there at the time of his death.

While living in the Postville area, the Zweibohmers were members of St. Bridget's Church. Most recently, Ray was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church and its Rosary Society.

Ray enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and guitar playing.

Survivors include his wife, Winifred of Ossian, a son, Larry and Helena Zweibohmer of Clermont, four daughters, Janice and Joseph Connell of Stewartville, Minn., Doris and Arthur Walz of Monona, Shirley and Terrence Lensing of De Forest, Wis. and Carol and Ken Wiltgen of Ossian.

Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, Deb and Ken Huettl, David and Joan Bruns, Misty and Erik Johnson, Michael Zweibohmer, Kathy and Steve Mueller, Barb Peake, Karla and Todd Hanson, Lorin Walz, Nancy and Tim Schmidt, Jeff and Cathrine Lensing, Chris and Tammy Lensing, Cory Lensing, Andrew Lensing, Marcine and Tom Raatz, Lisa and Marty Lensing, Annette and Eric Schweinefus, Jennifer and Allen Schott, and Ryan and Kristie Wiltgen.

Other survivors include 26 great grandchildren, three brothers, Ervin Zweibohmer of Ossian, Clarence and Loretta Zweibohmer of Ossian and Gerald Zweibohmer of Riverside, Calif., and two sisters, Olivia and Leonard Schlee of Decorah and Hilda Powers of Monticello.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a grandchild, Gerald Walz, a great grandchild, Nathan Lansing, and a sister, Rose Becker.
