Bernard Wesley Rose

Bernard Rose, 65, of Ossian, died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at the home of his daughter in Germantown, Wis., after a courageous battle with a malignant brain tumor.

A funeral mass was held Monday, July 12, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, with the Rev. Jim Warosh, S.J., officiating.

Music was provided by friends of the family. Lectors were Nichole Rose, LaVerne Rose and Eleane Wokwicz. Presenting offertory gifts were Carmen Rose, Lynn Rose and Kirsten Rose.

Casket bearers were Alan Rose, James Rose, Kurt Uhlenhake, Terry Rose, Gary Rothmeyer and Leon Buchheit. In honorary attendance were members of the Brockman-Hammersland American Legion Post No. 503.

Interment was at the St. Francis Cemetery. The Schmitz Funeral Home of Ossian handled arrangements.

Bernard Wesley Rose was born Nov. 25, 1933, in rural Fayette County, near West Union, the son of Irey and Mabel (Kirkestue) Rose Sr. He was baptized and confirmed at Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian.

He received his education by attending Dover No. 3 country school and graduated from West Union High School in 1952.

After graduation, Bernard was employed at Falb Motors in Postville. On May 9, 1956, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served his country until May 8, 1958. From 1958 until 1962, he was a member of the reserves.

On July 20, 1956, he married Sharlene Ann Bushman at the Westside Chapel in Fort Hood, Texas.

After his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Postville, where he again was employed by Falb Motors. In 1959, he moved to Ossian, where he managed Sevatson's gas station.

For many years, Bernard worked in agricultural sales for various companies. In 1980, he founded Rose Co., providing agri-services in Northeast Iowa. During the past three years he was employed at Dura-Automotive, formerly Excel Industries.

Bernard formerly served on the Ossian City Council, the Ossian Senior Hospice Board and was a Scout leader and Den master for the Ossian Boy Scouts. He enjoyed spending time and traveling with his family, visiting with friends and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife, Sharlene; five sons, two daughters and two granddaughters: (Bernard) Peter and Carmen Rose and Nichole of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; Kevin and friend Betty of Ossian; Monte and Lynne Rose and Victoria of Hartland, Wis.; David of Houston, Texas; Rae and Kirsten Rose of Milwaukee, Wis.; Rebecca of Glendale, Wis.; and Jennifer of Germantown, Wis.

Also surviving are three brothers, LaVerne and Betty Rose of Decorah, Eugene and Vidys Rose of Arlington, and Irey (Bud) Jr. and Ann Rose of Raymond; a sister-in-law, Betty Lou Rose of Elgin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bernard Rose was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son at birth; and a brother, Charles.
