Clem 'Mike' Bohr

Clem "Mike" J. Bohr, 90, of Ossian, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at the Bethany-Riverside Nursing Home in La Crosse, Wis., after a lengthy illness.

A funeral mass was held Friday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, with the Rev. Richard Kuhn and the Rev. Vincent Simon officiating.

Diane Stee was the organist. Music was by the St. Francis adult choir and the congregation.

Offertory gifts were presented by Jane Einck, Millie Bohr and Karen Giddings. Eucharistic ministers were Jeanne Lechtenberg and Julie Ernst.

Prayer leaders were Beth Choate, Brenda Roberts, Terri Lynn Bohr, Jill Hittner, Jackie Bohr and Jennifer Giddings.

Casket bearers were Christopher Bohr, Tim Bohr, Craig Bohr, Todd Einck, Jeffrey Einck, Douglas Einck and Matthew Giddings. In honorary attendance were members of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2073 of Ossian.

Interment was at the St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian. The Schmitz Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Clem was born March 26, 1908, in rural Ossian, Winneshiek County, the son of Herman and Agnes (Hemesath) Bohr. He was baptized by the Rev. C. B. Lechtenberg March 27, 1908, and confirmed in his faith at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian Oct. 25, 1922, by the Most Rev. James J. Keane. He obtained an education by attending De Sales School.

As a young man, Clem started his life's work by hauling cream and trucking. On April 20 1937, he was united in marriage to Mary M. Hageman. The ceremony took place at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church at Festina by the Rev. A. J. Rubly.

The couple raised their family of five on the farm southwest of Castalia and retired to the town of Ossian in March of 1968. In his retirement, Clem sharpened knives, saws and scissors. He also had a talent for repairing things.

Clem was a lifelong member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, its Rosary Society and Knights of Columbus Council No. 2073. He enjoyed playing the violin, fishing, card playing and telling jokes. He also liked watching sports.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Norman and Sandra Bohr of Decorah, and Melvin and Jeanne Bohr of Castalia; three daughters, Mary Jane and Richard Einck of Cedar Rapids, Mildred Bohr of Woodbury, Minn., and Karen and Jerry Giddings of Cedar Rapids.

Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, Brenda and Robyn Roberts, Julie and Mark Ernst, Christopher and Kimberly Bohr, Jill and Nick Hittner, Tim Bohr, Jackie Bohr, Craig and Renee Bohr, Terri Lynn Bohr, Beth and Kent Choate, Todd and Thuy Einck, Jeffrey and Karen Einck, Douglas and Glee Einck, Matthew Giddings, and Jennifer Giddings.

There are 11 great-grandchildren, Taylor Rene Roberts, MacKenzie Roberts, Andrew Ernst, Ryan Ernst, Austin Bohr, Jonathan Hittner, Rebecca Hittner, Bryce Einck, Connor Einck, Quinn Einck and Kirby Einck; two step-great-grandchildren, Andy Choate and Ben Choate; a brother, John Bohr; and two sisters, Rita Heying of Ionia and Sister Marie Bohr, O.S.F. of Dubuque.

Clem "Mike" Bohr was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, William Bohr, Anton Bohr, the Rev. Jerome Bohr, the Rev. Richard Bohr and Hugo Bohr; four sisters, Rose Heying, Agnes Heying, Pauline Holthaus and Hilda Holthaus; and numerous nieces and nephews.
