Funeral services for Earl Stendel were held Wednesday, October 2, 2002, at 1:00 p.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, Iowa. The Reverend Dave L. Lenth officiated, assisted by Pastor Verdon Swenson. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Greenwood Centennial Cemetery at rural Ossian, Iowa. Casket bearers were Dale, Bob, Keith, Jerry, Cornell and Lyle Bodensteiner, Ludger Thuente, Ron Ehler, Bill Buddenberg, Bill Ohloff, Roger and Joe Balk. Honorary casket bearers were Dawn and Dana Stendel; Brittany, Bridget and Blake Buddenberg; Chelsey, Collin, and Claire Hanson; Nicholas, Stephanie and Lindsey Paul.

Earl Everett Stendel, the son of Hyless and Iva May (Burns) Stendel, was born November 5, 1938, in Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County, near Castalia, Iowa. He passed away Saturday, September 28, 2002, in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at Iowa City, Iowa. He had reached the age of 63 years, 10 months, and 23 days.

He attended the Moneek School No. 5 and graduated from the Ossian High School in 1957. Earl's father died when he was four years old, and he and his mother and sister farmed the family farm together. He continued farming there until 1964 when he worked for Nelson's Well Drilling Company. In 1965 he went back to the farm.

On June 6, 1961 Earl was married to Arlene Bodensteiner in St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian by Father Weiss. To this union four children were born, Scott, Pam, Karla and Kim.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hyless and Iva May, his step-father, Miles Ames, and two brothers-in-law, Ray Stoll and Ray Norton.

Surviving is his wife, Arlene, one son, Scott (Elaine) Stendel of Decorah, three daughters, Pam (Doug) Buddenberg of Castalia, Karla (Ken) Hanson of Elgin, IA, and Kim (Dave) Paul of Maynard, IA, one sister, Darlene (Spencer) Graves of Decorah, and a step-sister, Linda Norton of Cedar Rapids, 11 grandchildren, Dawn and Dana Stendel, Brittany, Bridget, and Blake Buddenberg, Chelsey, Collin and Claire Hanson, and Nicholas, Stephanie and Lindsey Paul.

Also surviving are eight brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, Virgil and Connie Bodensteiner of Texas, Cornell and June Bodensteiner of Louisiana, Ludger and Lynn Thuente of Illinois, Jerry and Diane Bodensteiner of Cedar Rapids, Leo and Brenda Bodensteiner of New Mexico, Bob and Gin Bodensteiner of Elkader, IA, Dale Bodensteiner and Donna Moen of Ossian, Lyle and Nancy Bodensteiner of Waukon and Keith and Chris Bodensteiner of Ossian, and many nieces and nephews.

Earl loved his grandchildren and enjoyed having them come to visit. He was a fan of the "old-time" western movies and liked country music as well. Earl liked to go fishing and trapping. He enjoyed his work on the farm, and he especially liked working with the livestock. Earl had two collie dogs, Laddie and Lambert, whom he also loved.
