Alvin Carl Franzen 1925-2001

Alvin Carl Franzen, 76, of Decorah, died Friday, June 1, 2001 at his daughter's home in Decorah following a lengthy illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial service was held at St. Benedict Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Monday, June 4, with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Mass servers were Jeff Thorson, Tyler Bruening and Justin Holthaus.

Music was provided by organist Alan Sensor. Cantor was Joan Schissel. Musical selections included "How Great Thou Art" and "Come Follow Me".

Casket bearers were John Hill, Gene Gorby, Chuck Rauter, Michael Kruger, Daniel Smith, Gary Moellers, Troy Ramstad and Joe Moellers.

Interment was in St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery.

Military rites were provided by Helof-Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977 and French & Balik Funeral Home of Decorah handled arrangements.

Alvin Carl Granzen was born April 8, 1925, the son of Joseph and Johanna (Baumler) Franzen on the family farm in rural St. Lucas.

He attended St. Luke's Catholic School in St. Lucas, and then served in the U. S. Army from 1950-1952.

He then went to work for the Rath Packing Plant in Waterloo from 1953-1984, working for 31 years until the plant closed. He then worked on a farm for five years.

He married Carol Ramstad Nov. 25, 1978. He enjoyed hunting, farming, yard work and being outdoors.

He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the V.F.W. in Waterloo.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Franzen of Decorah; four children, Polly (Tom) Lasley of Decorah, Darcy (David) Stoen of Fort Benning, Ga., Kim (Jonathan) Weber of Cedar Falls and Anthony Franzen at home; nine grandchildren; one brother, Eligius "Sam" Franzen of Fort Atkinson; seven sisters: Dorothy (Clair) Moellers of Fort Atkinson; Alvina (Charlie) Zook of Sioux City; Eileen (Kenneth) Hill of Cedar Falls; Jane (Jim) Jones of Leon; Marilyn (Dale) Bedard, Lou (Jim) Schuller, and Kathy (Gene) Gorby, all of Waterloo; and several nieces and nephews.

Alvin Carl Franzen was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Zachary and a nephew, David Moellers.

Funeral services for Alvin C. Franzen were held 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 4, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating. Interment was in the St. Benedict’s Church Cemetery in Decorah. French and Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Carol of Decorah; two daughters: Polly Lasley of Decorah and Kim Weber of Cedar Falls; two sons: David Stoen of Fort Benning, GA and Anthony Franzen at home; nine grandchildren; one brother: Eligius “Sam” of Fort Atkinson; and seven sisters: Dorothy Moellers of Fort Atkinson, Alvina Zook of Sioux City, Lou Schuller of Waterloo, Kathy Gorby of Waterloo, Eileen Hill of Cedar Falls, Marilyn Bedaal of Waterloo and Jane Jones of Leon.
