Mildred Clare Drew

Mildred Drew, 87, of Elma, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, of natural causes at Colonial Manor Home in Elma.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 1, at 10:30 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with the Rev. Roger Rethamel presiding.

Theresa Burke was the organist and accompanied the church choir.

Hymn selections included "Be Not Afraid", "How Great Thou Art", "Hail Mary Gentle Woman" and "Amazing Grace".

Terri Thayer and Mary Boege were lectors and gift bearers were Donald Schwartzhoff and Pete Palmersheim.

Casket bearers were Daniel Drew, Eugene Knox, Karl Gilbertson, John Boege, Leonard Freidhof and John Freidhof.

Interment was at St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery in Decorah Monday, Nov. 2, at 1:15 p.m., with the Rev. Gary Krapfl presiding. The Conway Funeral Home in Elma handled arrangements.

Mildred Clare (Knox) Drew was born Dec. 25, 1911, in Burr Oak Township of Winneshiek County, rural Decorah, the daughter of Thomas E. and Marie (Cashman) Knox.

After graduation from Decorah High School in 1930, she taught for a time in the rural schools of Winneshiek County.

Mildred was married to Emmett J. Drew on June 1, 1933, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Plymouth Rock. The couple farmed near Decorah for many years.

Mildred will be remembered for her artistry in cake baking. Her specialties were wedding cakes and replicas of buildings and churches.

After their retirement, the couple moved to Eustis, Fla., where they resided. After the death of her husband, Mildred continued to live in Eustis until 1993, when she moved to Elma.

Survivors include her foster son, Donald Schwartzhoff of Clarinda; two sisters, Regina Broghammer of Decorah and Genevieve Palmersheim of Des Moines; two sisters-in-law, Josephine Drew and Florence Wenthold, both of Decorah; and nieces and nephews.

Mildred Drew was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett in 1979; her parents; five sisters, Grace Knox, Vera Gilbertson, Geraldine Bell, Marcella Knox and Mary Knox in infancy; and one brother, Thomas J. Knox.
