Vivian G. Remke

Vivian Remke, 87, of Decorah, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital following an illness.

A funeral mass will be held Friday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m., at St. Benedict Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Alan Sensor will be the organist. Joan Schissel will be the cantor.

Songs will include "Be Not Afraid", "On Eagle's Wings", "Amazing Grace", and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling".

Mass servers will be Jeremy Flynn, Jamie Remke and Jacob Axmir.

Casket bearers will be Mike, John J. and Mark Schimming, Jerry and David Remke and Ray Joe Johnson.

Burial was at the St. Benedict Cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral home is handling arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday, Sept. 30, from 4-7 p.m., with a rosary and scripture wake service at 5 p.m.

Vivian G. (Gaul) Remke was born Jan. 3, 1912 in Hannibal, Mo., the daughter of John and Anna (Waller) Gaul. Vivian moved with her family to Plymouth Rock, Iowa and attended country school. She then graduated from Notre Dame High School in Cresco.

Vivian married Raymond Remke May 28, 1929, in Plymouth Rock. To this union four children were born.

Vivian worked for Krieter Strawberry Farms, Decorah Produce, Ness' Grocery Store, Reardon Produce, Ditto Food Market and Coast to Coast, retiring in 1976.

Vivian enjoyed fishing, crocheting, sewing, dancing and playing cards, She was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Madonna Circle and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Survivors include two daughters, Darlyne and Donald Johnson of Decorah, and Phyllis and John Schimming of Canton, Minn.; two sons, Dean Remke of Pomona, Calif., and Dale and Edith Remke of McGregor; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Lucille Dempewolf of Albert Lea, Minn., Dorothy Marseilles of Riverside, Calif., and Edie Carolan of Pomona, Calif.; and two brothers, Ray and Dorothy Gaul of Pomona, Calif., and Shelby Gaul of Pomona, Calif.

Vivian Remke was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray, in 1973; one brother, Emmett Waller Gaul; and two sisters, Francis Carolan and Juanita Licata.
