John Sylvester Bushman 1914-2001

John Bushman, 86, of Ossian, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 at his home after a sudden illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Ossian with Msgr. Cletus Hawes officiating. Lector was Tom Bushman. Arlene Brockman was organist, and soloists were Denise Uhlenhake and Jim Hawkins.

Casket bearers were Tom Bucheit, Larry Leibold, Steve Bushman, Carl Bushman, Gerald Bushman, Paul Bushman, Donnie Bushman and Darnell Huinker.

Honorary casket bearers were Irene Stahr, Mildred Lyons, Mary Ann Witt, Mary Schissel, Susan Thorson, JoAnn Wenthold, Eileen, Courtney and Katherine Uhlenhake.

Burial was at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Cemetery in Ossian, with Ossian Funeral Chapel handling arrangements.

John Sylvester Bushman was born Dec. 5, 1914 to Bernard and Christine (Bodensteiner) Bushman on the family farm near Ossian. He attended country school and worked on the family farm.

On Oct. 20, 1937, he married Helen Huber at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. After they were married, they lived near Postville on a farm for a year. They then moved back to the family farm, where they stayed until 1974, when they moved to Ossian. John Bushman continued to work on the farm for a few years, an then took jobs as a janitor at the Ossian Senior Hospice, which he held for many years, and later occasionally helped out at the Hospice in any way he could. He enjoyed watching baseball, going on fishing trips, playing cards, and visiting.

Surviving John Bushman are a brother, LaVerne and Rita Bushman of Ossian; and two sisters, Rose Huinker of Oelwein, Iowa and Henrietta Krum of Brownsville, Texas.

John Sylvester Bushman was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Bushman, on Dec. 7, 1996; his parents; four brothers: Peter, Edward, Albert and [copy is cut off here.]
