Ralph Oliver Roney

Ralph Roney, 88, of Decorah, died Monday, April 9, 2001 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev's James Glesne, Ole Winter and Bryan Robertson officiating.

Music was provided by organist Kathy Murray and soloist Aaron Theise who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "On Eagle's Wings". The congregation sang "Rock of Ages" and "In the Garden."

Casket bearers were Lee Roney, Tom Roney, John Roney, Josh Roney, Chris Roney and John Quandahl.

Honorary casket bearers were Joel Farley, Chad Keily, Eric Roriey, Craig Roney, John Barrett, Jason Farley, David Farley, Terry Kessler, Nate Theise, Eric Troendle, Matt Troendle, Chris Troendle, Jason Quandahl, Cory Roney, Larry Roney, Derek Roney, David Roney and Shawn Roney.

Interment was at the Lutheran Cemetery of Decorah. French and Balik Funeral Home of Decorah handled arrangements.

Ralph Oliver Roney was born August 9, 1912 to John P. and Nettie (Dahl) Roney in rural Winneshiek County.

He attended the Springwater School and worked as a farmhand following his schooling.

Ralph Roney married Angeline Klotzbach April 27, 1934 in Waukon.

They farmed north of Decorah before moving to Decorah in 1949.

Ralph Roney worked for Carlson's until he retired in 1974. He was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church. After his retirement, he refinished furniture, but what he especially enjoyed was going to the Mississippi to fish.

Survivors include his wife, Angeline Roney of Decorah; four daughters, Jeanette and Gordon Harms of Pierre, S.D.; Ruth Farley of New Albin; Elaine and Richard Kessler of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and Trudy and John Barrett of Loveland, Colo.; five sons, Robert and Joanne Roney of Decorah; Donald and Arlene Roney of Loveland, Colo.; Arlin and Pat Roney of Moncks Corner, S.C.; Duane and Linda Roney of Charles City and Dale and Dawn Roney of Waukon; 41 grandchildren; 90 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Additional survivors include three sisters, Audrey Smock of Coronado, Calif.; Evelyn and Jim Anderson of Decorah and Marlys Roney of Cedar Rapids, and several nieces and nephews.

Ralph Oliver Roney was preceded in death by his parents, John and Nettie Roney; a stepmother, Pearl Roney; a brother, James Roney; a sister, Esther Mulinx; one grandson; one step great-grandson and three son-in-laws, Don Schultz, Bernie Gacke and James Farley.
