Cora DeWitt
Cora L. DeWitt, 97, of Decorah, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000 at Aase Haugen Home.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 11 a.m. at Fjelstul Funeral Home with Rev. Steven Jacobsen officiating.
Interment is at Decorah Lutheran Cemetery. Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Honorary pallbearers were Albert Anderson, Howard Bernatz, Clifford Hathaway, Dean Orwoll, Gregg Rude and Norm Smith.
Rev. Marion Miller was organist. Congregational hymns included "Amazing Grace" and "Behold a Host Arrayed in White."
Cora (Tokvam) DeWitt was born August 15, 1903, in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County to Lewis and Mary (Aschim) Tokvam. She was baptized on September 15, 1903 at Glenwood Lutheran Church and confirmed May 13, 1917 at First Lutheran Church. She is a graduate of Decorah High School.
On June 20, 1928, she married Bernard "Modie" DeWitt at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa. The couple owned a barber and hobby shop in Decorah until his sudden death in September 1958. She then worked as a secretary in the Decorah City Clerk's office until her retirement.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church, where she was a deaconess and a member of the altar guild. She was a member of Rebekkah Lodge, I.O.O.F.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Gregory DeWitt and wife Linda of Schuylerville, N.Y., and Carrie Ehresman and husband Gregory of Lafayette, Ind,; a daughter-in-law, Helen Miller of Lafayette, Ind.; three grandchildren, Dan and Eric DeWitt and Samantha Ehresman; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Cora DeWitt was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard; one son, Bruce; and one sister, Mabel Hoare.
Memorials may be given to the Aase Haugen Home.
