Durwin 'Hum' Dinger

Durwin "Hum" Dinger, 68, of Ballwin, Mo., died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Fjelstul Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas Miller officiating.

Casket bearers will be David Carlson, R. Eric Carlson, Roger K. Fjelstul, Glenn Miller, Jerry Perry and James Weis.

Honorary bearers are John Custer, David L. Dinger, Norrie "Gus" Erickson, Brian Kelly and Donald Lornen.

Burial will be at the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah with full military honors by Helof-Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977 and Bernatz-Symonds American
Legion Post No. 163.

Visitation at the Fjelstul Funeral Home will be held Thursday, Aug, 31, from 5-7 p.m.

Durwin was born March 9, 1932, in Decorah, the son of Roy and Liv (Hansen) Dinger. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1950. He received his bachelor of science degree in agronomy from Iowa State University.

Durwin was in the United States Army from July 29, 1954 through July 17, 1956. He served in Germany.

He was united in marriage with Sharon L. Ashley Aug 2, 1958, in Austin, Minn.

Durwin worked for Doane Agricultural Service until 1970. After that time, he was self-employed in the real estate business.

A member of the Lutheran faith, Durwin also was a member of Beta Sigma Psi and the American Legion Post No. 1000. He was an avid bowler and golfer.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon; two daughters and six grandchildren, Linda and Brian Kelly of Rock Hill, Mo. and their children Brian Jr., Daniel, Maura and Conor; and Kristin and John Custer of Eureka, Mo. and their children, Erik and Jack; one brother, David L. and Carol Dinger of Decorah; one sister, Kathryn and Ray Berleyoung of Gualala, Calif.; and his mother-in-law, Lee Ashley of Austin, Minn.

Durwin "Hum" Dinger was preceded in death by his parents.
