Adolph Frederick Burri

Adolph F. Burri, 89, of Decorah, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at the Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minn.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 26, at noon, at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Steven Jacobsen officiating.

The Rev. Marion Miller was the organist. Soloist David Judisch sang "God Is My Shepherd" and "Thy Will Be Done." The congregation sang "Amazing Grace" and "What A Friend We Have in Jesus."

Casket bearers were Allan Boice, David Burri, David Hamilton and Ron Peterson.

Honorary bearers were Duane M. Bergan, Matthew Burri, Arnold R. Duneman and Lester K. Sofenson.

Burial was at the Lutheran Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Adolph Frederick Burri was born Jan. 4, 1910, in Howard County, the son of Joseph and Emma (Gerber) Burri.

He was baptized July 24, 1910 and confirmed June 6, 1926 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. After attending public school in Howard County and graduating with honors May 29 1925, he helped on the family farm, later working as a hired man on a number of farms.

On Oct. 13, 1937, he married Ruth Alberta Sandvik at Immanuel Lutheran in Cresco. To this union four children were born: Phyllis, Eugene, Constance and James.

They farmed until 1961. They then moved to Decorah, where Adolph worked for a number of years as a maintenance man at Luther College and head of maintenance in the Union, retiring in 1972.

After retirement from Luther, Adolph made his yard work, garden and cooking his avocations. He will long be remembered for his homemade bread, soups and pie crust. He enjoyed his home, his family and a good game of 500. They hosted many family parties and some summers went camping almost every weekend.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth, children Phyllis Burri of Decorah, Constance "Connie" and Fred Boice of St. Charles, Minn., Eugene and DiAnn Burri of Rochester, Minn., and James and Linda Burri of Decorah; grandchildren David Burri of Rochester, Minn., Julie (David) Hamilton of New Hope, Minn.; Michelle (Ron) Peterson of Lewiston, Minn., Allan (Kelly) Boice of St. Charles, Minn., and Matthew Burri of Decorah; great-grandchildren Vanessa Burri of Rochester, Minn., and Ian and Marissa Hamilton, and Tyler and Tara Hamilton of New Hope, Minn., Brandy and Hunter Peterson of Lewiston, Minn., Nolan and Nathan Boice of St. Charles, Minn., and David Peterson of Utica, Minn.; his brother, Paul and Carleen Burri of San Francisco, Calif.; and great-great-granddaughter, Abigail Peterson of Utica, Minn.

Adolph Burri was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Michael Burn; his sister, Irene Fountain Fencl; and a brother, George Burri Sr.
