Mayme Stee

Mayme Stee, 91, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at the Northgate Care Center in Waukon.

Funeral services were held Tuesday May 2, at 11 a.m., at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, with the Rev. Dave Lenth officiating.

Marlys Hager was the organist and Kenneth Timmerman was the soloist.

Casket bearers were Merle Stee Jr., Harlan Stee Jr., Jeff Stee, Tim Engelhardt, Daryl Helgerson and Byron Everman.

Burial was at Pleasant View Cemetery in Castalia. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Mayme Marie (Jones) Stee was born Nov. 15, 1908, in David City, Neb., the daughter of Edward Jones and Ardelia (Blair) Jones. She attended a Butler County rural school at David City, Neb. She worked as a cook.

On Dec. 31, 1930, she was married to Clifford Stee at Garrison, Neb. To this union three daughters were born. They lived in Castalia all their lives.

Mayme cooked at the Castalia Public School for many years. Clifford died in 1962.

Mayme took care of people in their homes when they could no longer care for themselves. When Mayme became ill and was unable to care for herself, she became a resident of Northgate Care Center in Waukon Sept, 24,1991.

Mayme was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia and the Women of the ELCA. She also was a member of the Embroidery Club and a card club.

Survivors include her daughters, Ardyth and Harold Earl Weller of McGregor, and Karen and Lucius Birtwell of Cortland, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Candy Weller, Craig Weller, Marie Phillips, Kevin Birtwell, John Birtwell, Steven Birtwell and William Birtwell; and 11 great-grandchildren, Marcy Birtwell, R.J. Philips, Chris Phillips, Tabitha Phillips, Jessica Birtwell, Matthew Birtwell, Travis Weller, Ryan Birtwell, Connor Birtwell, Zachary Birtwell and Adam Birtwell.

Also surviving are two sisters, Rose Knudtson of Spencer and Mabel Trager of Valparaiso, Ind.; and three sisters-in-law, Sybil Jones of Bell Gardens Calif., Hazel Stee of Castalia and Maythel Stee of Decorah.

Mayme Stee was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford; a daughter, Gretta; a grandson, James Birtwell; one brother, William Jones; one sister, Edna Kunkee; a niece, Lola Mastera; and nephew, Roger Jones.
