Howard Masters 1918-2000
Howard C. Masters, 81, of Mabel, Minn., died Friday, May 19, 2000, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 23, at 11 a.m., at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel, with the Rev. Lloyd Menke officiating.
Burial will be at the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery. The Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel is handling arrangements. Visitation will be held at the church Tuesday one hour prior to services.
Howard was born Oct. 25, 1918, in Burr Oak Township, Winneshiek County, the son of Guy and Edna (Morrison) Masters. He attended the Burr Oak Snell rural school.
On Jan. 21, 1939, he married Norma Haugen in Decorah. They farmed in the Burr Oak area until 1952, when they moved to Harmony, Minn.
They farmed there for a few years before going to work for Pederson Brothers from 1956-61. In 1961, they moved to Mabel, where Howard worked as a laborer and also at the Fiberite factory in Winona, Minn.
After his retirement in 1969, he worked with the Greenthumb program at the Mabel-Canton Schools as a custodian until 1979.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children, crafts, and spending time with his family.
Howard was a member of First Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Norma of Mabel, Minn.; three sons, Robert and Ruby Masters of Midland, Texas, Gerald and Vivian Masters of Potosi, Wis., and James and Gail Masters of New Hampton; and seven daughters, Ardath (Mrs. Lowell) Johnson of Mabel, Minn., Phyllis (Mrs. Thomas) Johnson of Edmond, Okla., Jean (Mrs. Robert) Watson of Redwing, Minn., Elaine Hahn of St. Cloud, Minn., Marcia (Mrs. Mike) Goss of St. Cloud, Minn., Lynnette (Mrs. Charlie) Rochford of Oelwein and Rhonda Masters of Hopkins, Minn.
Also surviving are 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Vyra Masters of Canton, Minn.
Howard Masters was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Bradley Masters; two brothers, Lyle and Victor; and three sisters, Vera Hovey, Ethel Mastellar and Nellie Masters.
