Howard Rude

Howard Rude, 78, of Decorah, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Thomas Miller officiating.

The Rev. Marion Miller was the organist. Soloist Ron Rude sang "The Lord's Prayer." The congregation sang "Amazing Grace" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives".

Casket bearers were Harlan Nesset, Ronald Rude, Darrel Mestad, Norman Moen, Jr., Donald Rude and Larry Mestad.

Interment was at the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Howard was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, the son of Julius and Olga (Rosendahl) Rude. He was baptized at Glenwood Lutheran Church and confirmed at First Lutheran Church.

Howard attended rural schools in Winneshiek County and served in the United States Army during World War II.

On Oct. 19, 1945, Howard was united in marriage with Irene Ruffridge at the St. John's Lutheran parsonage in Locust.

Howard lived in Winneshiek County his entire life, working on a construction crew after he and Irene were married, and then with his son operating the Phillips 66 Station during the 1970's. He also worked at Erickson's Service Station and the Big Bear store.

Being an avid fisherman, he enjoyed fishing on the Mississippi River with his family.

Survivors include his son, DuWayne and Raffaela Rude of Decorah; his granddaughter, Melissa and Alan Frey of Spring, Texas; two great grandchildren, Nathan and Macy Frey; his sisters, Helen and Melvin Borseth, Arlene Moen, and Norma and Kermit Mestad, all of Decorah; one brother, Curtis and Martha Rude of Decorah; several nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law Gladys Rude and Marion Moen; and brother-in-law Norman Moen.

Howard Rude was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene, who died in 1978; a son, Gary, who died in 1966; an infant great-granddaughter; his sister, Cora Moen; his brother, Roger; three brothers-in-law, Clarence Moen, Otto Nessert and Roy Halverson.
