Funeral services for Shannon Szabo were held Friday, February 16, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, Iowa. The Rev. Dave L. Lenth officiated. Marlys Hager was the organist and Kim Schutte was the soloist. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Bloomfield Cemetery in Castalia.

Shannon Clair Szabo, the son of Victor Ervin Szabo and Patricia Ann (Reilly) Szabo, was born October 8, 1965, at West Union, Iowa. He passed away Monday, February 12, 2001, in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at Iowa City, Iowa. He had reached the age of 35 years, four months, and four days.

He was graduated from Postville High School in 1984 where he had participated in wrestling and football. Shannon had been a driver for Dale Lee Distributing and had worked for Reilly Construction.

Shannon became ill and had surgery in 1995, he then went to live in Waterloo for about four years, moved to Cedar Rapids, and then was in Decorah for the last several months.

He enjoyed playing golf and attended most of the Hawkeye football games during the season. Shannon liked to go on fishing trips to Canada where he received an award in 1995 for the largest fish caught in that area.

He is survived by his daughter, Cassandra Euchner of Urbandale, Iowa; his father, Victor Szabo, of Castalia, Iowa; three sisters, Victoria Lynn (David) Svendsen of Castalia; Dina (Chris) Mottinger of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Lisa (Michael) Heins of Postville; two step-brothers, Randall (Molly) Cook of Cedar Rapids; Curtis (Suzie) Cook of St. Paul, Minnesota; two step-sisters, Teresa (Garet) Wyatt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Anita (Teryl) Subbert of Cedar Rapids; nieces and nephews, John and Jessica Svendsen, Danielle, Brittany, and Kelsey Heins, Hallie Mottinger, and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his mother Patricia, his step-mother, Shirley, a brother, Michael Allen Szabo, his paternal grandparents, Steve and Laura (Reisner) Szabo, his maternal grandmother, Delphene Reilly, and his material grandparents, Claire and Delores Reilly.

Casket bearers were Gary Brown, David O'Hara, Charles T. Brown, Danny Schnuelle, Larry Smith, Steven Schultz, Joe Schnuelle, Jeff Szabo, Kevin Wedo, and Marty Looney.
