Merlin Hanson 1930-1999

Merlin F. Hanson, 68, of Mabel, Minn., and a longtime farmer in the Hesper area, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah, following a fight with cancer.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 22, at 11 a.m., at the Hesper Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Burial will be at the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Friday, May 21, from 4-8 p.m., at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church Saturday.

Merlin was born Nov. 10, 1930, in Canoe Township of Winneshiek County, the son of Bennie and Velma (Roney) Hanson. He was baptized Dec. 7, 1930, and confirmed Nov. 12, 1944, by the Rev. Carl Losen at the Hauge Lutheran Church in rural Decorah.

He attended the Springwater School in Canoe Township, and graduated from the Decorah High School in 1948.

From 1953-55, he was stationed in Germany while serving in the United States Army. After his separation from the Army, Merlin began farming in Canoe Township of Winneshiek County.

On Sept. 17, 1960, he married Evelyn Aasum at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak. The couple then farmed in the Hesper Township of Winneshiek County and remained on the farm since then.

Merlin was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church, Farm Bureau, National and Iowa Holstein Associations, Winneshiek County Agricultural Association, Mabel Legion Post No. 299, and the Decorah Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Merlin served on the Hesper Township Trustees where he had been the township clerk for the past 20 years, the Aase Haugen Home Board and the Vennehjem Building Committee. He previously served on the Hesper Lutheran Church Council (as president for six terms), the Winneshiek County Dairy Council, the Winneshiek County DHIA Board, and treasurer of the State Line Dartball League, where he had played for the past 19 years.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Mabel, Minn.; one son, Davis and Brenda Hanson of Mabel; two daughters, Martha and Scott Svenson of Hiawatha, and Joyce and Philip Richert of Mabel; seven grandchildren, Erin and Carl Hanson, Justin and Joshua Svenson, and Nicholas, Collin and Wesley Richert; three brothers, Kenneth, Arlin and Willard, all of Decorah; and one sister, Roselyn Quam of Decorah.

Merlin Hanson was preceded in death by his parents.
