Elizabeth 'Betty' Hunter

Elizabeth "Betty" Hunter, age 77, of Decorah, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a sudden illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m., at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Frank Holland was the lector. Ushers were Frank and Vicki Holland and Duane and Kathryn Kuehner.

Alan Sensor was the organist. Joan Schissel was the cantor. Hymns were "Be Not Afraid," "On Eagle's Wings," "Amazing Grace" and "I Know My Redeemer Lives."

Casket bearers were Bob Hunter, Paul Hunter, Elizabeth Hunter, Sara Hunter, Sunshine Clausen and Gordon J. Hunter.

Interment was at the St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Elizabeth "Betty" Grace (Jungwirth) Hunter was born Feb. 14, 1923, in
Poygan, Wis., the daughter of Joseph Edward and Edna Marie (Flanagan) Jungwirth. Betty was one of seven children born to her parents.

Betty married Gordon E. Hunter April 6, 1942, in Winneconne, Wis. They moved to Decorah in 1973.

Betty was a housewife and mother of 11 children, and she was a wonderful grandmother to many grandchildren.

She was her husband's bookkeeper and secretary during his years with Patz. She and Gordon traveled all over the United States. She belonged to the Carry-On Club, St. Benedict Catholic Church and St. Theresa's Circle and a bridge club. Betty also belonged to a bowling team until 1992 and she spent many mornings fishing at various Winneshiek County trout streams.

For several years she was a cake decorator and made several family wedding cakes. Betty also was a seamstress and crocheted for many years. She liked to read books and entertain family and friends. She will be remembered for wonderful cooking, sense of humor, love for her cat, playing cards, Thanksgiving feasts, Christmas gatherings, Easter Egg hunts for the grandchildren, and her giggly laugh when she was enjoying her family.

Survivors include 10 children: Virginia Albrecht of Helena, Mont., Bonnie and David Graska of Camarillo, Calif., Barbara and Edmund Pascoe of Tortola, B.V.I., Suzanne Mittlestadt of Anchorage, Alaska; Mary Lou and Don Selle of Jenks, Okla., Jean Hunter and Lee Ellickson Sr. of Decorah, Gordon W. and Renate Hunter of Decorah, Gerald and Ruth Ann Hunter of Kensington, Minn., William and Marge Hunter of Greenville, Wis., and Pete Hunter and Marian Brem of Corpus Christi, Texas.

There are 31 grandchildren: Teresa Peterson, Brian Peterson, Kevin and Donna Peterson, Timothy and Michelle Peterson, David and Tamara Peterson, Christina and Adam Nelson, Bill Jr. and Laureen Hunter, Jeff and Debbie Hunter, Chet Graska, Lisa and Christian Allen, Jerry Jr. and Stacey Hunter, Erie Hunter, Paul and Janet, Gordy J., Sara, Max and Lucas Hunter, Ben Mittlestadt, Chris and Sarah Mittlestadt, Matt Mittlestadt, Laura and Bobby Selle, Elizabeth, Bob and Ian Hunter and Sunshine Clausen, Samantha and Zachary Pascoe, Jeffrey and Melissa Engelhardt, Kristine and Peter Nelsen and Jay Selle.

There are 27 great-grandchildren: Tory Quinnell, Keith, Karsten and Kytlun Peterson, Jonathan, Esther, Elizabeth and Jacob Peterson, Nathaniel, Nicholas and Rachel Peterson, Samantha and Alyssa Nelson, Tiffany and Crystal Hunter, Kylie and Kaden Hunter, Emily and Abby Allen, Avery Hunter, Samantha and Hannah Mittlestadt, Dederic, Cylina, Matt and Gabriel Engelhardt, Scott and Hunter Mittlestadt and two great grandchildren due to arrive in 2001.

Survivors also include one brother, Gordon and Betty Jungwirth of Oshkosh, Wis.; three sisters: Marie and Harry Dushenski of Omro, Wis., Jean Stracke of Oshkosh, Wis., and Suzanne and Donald Tyler of Oshkosh, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth "Betty" Hunter was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Jungwirth in 1966 and Edna (Flanagan) Jungwirth in 1983; her husband, Gordon E. Hunter on July 18, 1999; one son, James Gordon Hunter on Dec. 14, 1959; one son-in-law, Gary Albrecht in 1998; one brother, Joseph Jungwirth; one sister, Margaret Hopp; one sister-in-law, Katherine Bean in October of 1999; and one brother-in-law, Lawrence Hunter in June of 2000.
