Darlene M. Haugen, 71, of Decorah, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Thomas Miller officiating. The Rev. Marion Miller was the organist. The congregation sang "Jesus Loves Me," "How Great Thou Art " and "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."

Casket bearers were Cody Haugen, Dustin Haugen, Ron Haugen Jr., Scott Haugen, Joseph Baldridge, Scott Hemrich and James Tupy.

Burial was at the Union Prairie Cemetery near Decorah. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Darlene (Fretheim) Haugen was born May 31, 1928, at her family's farm in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, the daughter of John E. and Edrie M. (Anderson) Fretheim. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1947.

Darlene was married to Norman D. Haugen May 24, 1957, at First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

She worked in the Winneshiek County Recorders Office, then at Farmers Home Administration for over 30 years, until retiring in March of 1989. Then she went on the road with her husband, who worked for Holland Brothers, for a couple summers.

Darlene was a member of First Lutheran Church and its circles. She enjoyed caring for her lawn, gardening and traveling.

Survivors include three sons, Steven and Kathy Haugen of rural Cresco, David and Jan Haugen of Des Moines, and Ron and Rossana Haugen of Santa Teresa, N.M.; one sister, Jeannine Chevalier of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, Stacy Hamm (Brad), Dustin and Cody Haugen, Stephanie Haugen-Baldridge (Joseph), Sara Tupy (James), Scott Haugen, Ron Jr. and Jaqui Haugen, and Krissana Jayme-Haugen; five great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Bryan and Nicholas Hamm, Hope Haugen and Steven Baldridge; and five step-grandchildren, Scott, Samantha and Sonya Hemrich, and Damian and Dominique Bayona.

Darlene Haugen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman, who died June 15, 1998; and one sister, Arlowayne Fretheim.
