Mae Ward, 94, of Decorah, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000 at Green Lea Manor in Mabel.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec.13 at 11 a.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church, with Rev. James Glesne and Rev. Ole Winter officiating.

Organist was Kathy Murray. Soloist Arlene Foltz sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden."

Pallbearers were Donald and Klee Smith, Craig, Gene, Rick and Steve Underbakke.

Honorary Pallbearers were her grandchildren, Janeen Justice and Chris Ward.

Burial was at Burr Oak Cemetery. Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah handled the arrangements.

Mae Constance Ward was born Sept. 23, 1906 to Lars and Maria (Tjelmen) Underbakke in Chester, Iowa. She attended grade school in Chester.

She married Rexford Allen Ward on Thanksgiving Day in 1925 in Burr Oak. They had two children.

Mae Constance Ward was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church and former
member of Ossian Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Ossian American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of Norway, and the Joan of Arc Club; where she was the last charter member and the most continuous member, having joined at age 16.

She was considered a grandma to many children she had cared for in the area. She enjoyed crocheting and making things for her family.

Mae Constance Ward had been a resident of Green Lea Manor since June 17, 1998.

Surviving Mae Ward are her two children, Constance Mae "Connie" and Donald Martens of Rock Island, Illinois and Bob and Diane Ward of Decorah; two grandchildren, Janeen and Chris Justice of Tiffin, Iowa & Chris & Janice Ward of Onalaska, Wis.; and four great-grandchildren, Kira, McKenzie and Taylor Justice and Jacob Ward.

Mae Constance Ward was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on Nov. 9, 1971, and by six brothers: Elmer Ward [Underbakke], Knut Ward [Underbakke], Burt Ward [Underbakke], Gustav Ward [Underbakke], Louis Ward [Underbakke] and Melvin Ward [Underbakke] and two sisters, Agnes Wicks, Ellen Reed.
