Alert N. Lovstuen, 87, of Decorah, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minn.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m., at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating.

Kathy Tollefsrud will be the organist. Soloist Harold Pedersen will sing "Borning Cry" and "In the Garden". Congregational hymns will be "Faith of Our Fathers" and "How Great Thou Art".

Casket bearers will be Jeffrey Vine, John Vine, Aaron Lovstuen, David Vine, Tom Vine, Nick Lovstuen and Darren Lovstuen.

Honorary bearers will be Wanda Lawson, Carrie Swenson, Brenda Tollefson, Pam Renard, Connie Wilson and Diane Tollefsrud.

Interment will be at the Burr Oak Cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Alert was born Oct. 9, 1912, the son of Nels and Hilda (Hagen) Lovstuen in Barnesville, Minn. At the age of 2, he moved with his family to Frankville Township and then to Glenwood Township when he was 8, both in Winneshiek County.

Alert was confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church June 19, 1927. He attended country school in Glenwood Township and also worked as a hired hand in the Glenwood and Waukon areas.

Alert married Velva H. Kruse at the Glenwood parsonage June 1, 1937. In 1938 he started farming with his mother and then in 1940, they moved to Burr Oak and rented the Oxley and Wanless farms. In 1953, they purchased the Jim Headington farm and farmed until he retired in 1977.

Alert was a longtime member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church, where he served in various capacities that included Church Council, ushering and preparation for communion. He also was a 4-H leader.

Survivors include his wife, Velva, of the Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minn.; two daughters, Donna and Alvin Vine of Decorah, and Vivian and Darrell Vine of Mabel, Minn.; one son, Norbert and Diane Lovstuen of Decorah; two brothers, Alton and Rosie Lovstuen of Cedar Rapids, and Norton Lovstuen of Decorah; and one sister, Thelma and Leo Moen of Decorah.

There are 13 grandchildren surviving: Jeffrey Vine, David Vine, Wanda and Dennis Lawson, John and Lori Vine, Pam and Randy Renard, Tom Vine, Carrie and David Swenson, Connie and Mike Wilson, Brenda and Dan Tollefson, Diane and Don Tollefsrud, Aaron and Melissa Lovstuen, Nick Lovstuen and Darren Lovstuen.

There are 14 great-grandchildren surviving: Traci, Shanna, Justin, Brittaney, Maxwell, Katherine Ann, Matthew, Sarah, Kristine, Megan, Leigh, Ross, Samantha and Theodore.

Alert Lovstuen was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Martha Moen; and one brother, Milton Lovstuen.
