Mrs. Rilla Letchford, whose passing away was announced last week, was born as Rilla Bailey on May 3, 1855, in Lowell, Mass., the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Jane Crowley Bailey. When she was but a child of one year her parents came to Waukon, moving to Myron shortly after their arrival. Several years later they moved to a farm just north of Frankville which was the Bailey home for many years.
On March 31, 1880, she was married to Landon Letchford and the young couple started farming just south of Frankville, on the farm now owned by John Lydon, where Earl Livingood lives. They became the parents of four children, Edna, (Mrs. Sherman Bollman), and Carl F., both of Frankville; Leon, who passed away at the age of 15 years, and one child which died in infancy.
Mrs. Letchford was a member of the Methodist church, a Sunday School teacher and a member of the W. C. T. U., and of the Ladies' Aid for many years, besides being a leader in the church choir.
Mrs. Letchford passed away July 21, 1943, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edna Bollman, on the farm where she had spent the greater part of her useful life.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband and an only brother. She is survived by two children, Edna and Carl; three grandchildren, Ruth (Mrs. James Drew), Lyle Bollman and Leon Letchford. Also surviving are her sister, Mrs. Callie Letchford, formerly of Estherville, who lives in the Bollman home, also four great grandsons, Ronald, Gary and Bruce Bollman and James Drew, Jr.
