Leslie Laterman died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006 at Waukon Good Samaritan Center at the age of 82.

Funeral service is Saturday, Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. at Frankville Community Presbyterian Church with Rev. James Walker officiating. Interment is in the Frankville Cemetery, Frankville, Iowa. Casketbearers are Jerry Haugen, Larry Hermanson, Thomas Schoffel, Ronnie Hermanson, David Sinning and Bernard Wanless. Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Leslie Leonard Laterman was born April 1, 1923 in Frankville Township, Winneshiek County, the son of Albert and Elsie (Rolfs) Laterman. He was baptized June 24, 1926 at Postville Lutheran Church, Postville, and confirmed April 10, 1938 at Burr Oak Lutheran Church, Burr Oak. He earned a Winneshiek County Public School Diploma May 25, 1937.

Lester was united in marriage with Marion Ruby Brandt Dec. 2, 1947 on her home farm in Frankville Township. They lived on the Brandt farm where he was a successful farmer for 52 years. The couple retired and moved into Decorah in 1999.

He was a member of Frankville Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder and Trustee. He was Farm Bureau director and township president and Winneshiek County Farm Bureau vice president. He served as chair of the Winneshiek County Extension Council and was a member of IOOF Lodge in Decorah for 35 years. He was also chair of the Election Board for Frankville Township and was a representative of the Gideons. They donated land south of Frankville to Winneshiek County Conservation Board for the Marilie Educational Forest Reserve and in 1984, he was named Iowa Woodland Owner of the Year. He and Marion belonged to a Square Dance Club in Monona and enjoyed ballroom dancing together. He also enjoyed cards, golf, travel and visiting with family and friends. In March of 2004 he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon.

He is survived by a brother, Hartley Laterman of Waterloo and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion, on June 4, 2004; his parents; an infant sister, Maxine; a sister, Mildred Hermanson and a brother Vernon Haugen.
