Mabel Kneeskern

Mabel Artha Kneeskern, of Castalia, passed away Friday, March 20, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville. She was 91.

Memorial Services were held Friday, March 27, at Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia. The Rev. Dave Lenth will officiate. Inurnment will be held at a later date. Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Mabel was born on December 31, 1917, rural Volga, to William and Ella (Schmidt) Young. She attended Mink Creek Country School and graduated from Wadena High School.

Mabel was united in marriage to Robert F. Kneeskern on April 22, 1936, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Charles City. During WWII, Mabel and Robert worked together in a shipyard in Richmond, Calif. Mabel and Robert raised mink for commercial use for most of their lives and also ran a dairy farm together north of Castalia where they had registered Holsteins. After retiring, they had a home on Esmann Island in Guttenberg where they enjoyed spending time on the Mississippi River. Mabel and Robert later moved to Monona and lived there for fifteen years. While living there, she enjoyed tending to her flowers. They wintered several years at North Palm Beach, Fla.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia and Zion WELCA. Mabel loved spending time with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by the many people who knew her.

Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Kneeskern, on December 14, 1996; her parents; one daughter, Roberta Burns Prew; one son-in-law, Robert Burns; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise (Shirley) Averill, Ida Maye (Willis) Rowell, Dorothy (Joe) Leonard; one brother, William Young; two sisters-in-law, Carol Young and Rosalie Yarwood; brother-in-law, Ralph Kneeskern; and one great-great-grandson.

Survivors include her son, Lyle (Norma) Kneeskern, Castalia; eight grandchildren, Dan (Lisa) Kneeskern, Urbandale, Larry (Laura) Kneeskern, Golden, Colo., Monty (Lori) Burns, Elkader, Dennis (Diane) Burns, Ireton, Kent (Linda) Burns, Postville, Craig (Jaci) Burns, Postville, Jody (Tim) Pennington, Rochester, Minn., Jamey (Bobbi) Burns, Hawkeye; seventeen great-grandchildren, Bradley and Andrew Kneeskern, Erin and Matthew Kneeskern, Chris, Kyle and Kendra Burns, Jason (Hiliary) Burns, Nate (Meagan) Franken, Meagan (Kevin) Pies, Robert (Jessa) Burns, Zachary Burns, Jerad (Lori) Burns, Jeramey (Dana) Burns, Jesi (Darnel) Whitley, Elizabeth and Marshall Pennington; nine great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Young, Cedar Falls; two sisters-in-law, Loretta Kneeskern and Lucy Young; one son-in-law, Pete Prew and several nieces and nephews.
