Pioneer Decorahian Dies at Ocean Grove, N. J., Aged 92 Years

John G. Barthell, for many years a resident of this city, passed to his reward last Tuesday at Ocean Grove, N. J., where the family home has been for some years. He will be kindly remembered by Decorahians. The following obituary notice appears in the Evening Press of Asbury Park, under date of October 15th :

“Paralysis, with which he was strickened two weeks ago, John George Barthell, at his home, 9 Heck Avenue, Ocean Grove, aged 91 years, 1 month and 25 days. The funeral will be held at the house Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Rev. T. P. Gates officiating. Internment will be made in the family plot at Oakwood cemetery, Troy, N. Y., in charge Undertaker James H. Sexton.

Mr. Barthell was born in Bavaria, Aug 20, 1821. He came to America in 1844, settling in Troy N. Y., soon afterwards entering the army. In the war with Mexico he served in the artillery detachment. During the war of Rebellion he volunteered as one to protect the jail and other public property from the furious mob.

On Aug 19, 1852, he was united in marriage to Sophia W. Miller. From this union 11 children were born, six dying in early infancy.

Besides the widow he is survived by three sons – John W. and Howard F. of Decorah, Iowa, and Charles E. of Michigan, and two daughters, Sophia A. and Harriet I., who, with the wife were with him to the end.

He was the last survivor of a long lived family, his father reaching the age of 92, his mother dying at 86 years of age. A brother and two sisters lived to be 76 and two brothers reached the ripe age of 85 and 88 respectively.

For many years he was an earnest member of the German M. E. church of Decorah, Iowa, and until a few years ago never missed a service. His aim has always been to live an upright Christian life.”

Passed Away Last Week Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Ocean Grove N. J. – Paralysis is the Cause.

Word came to John W. and Howard F. Barthell last week that their father, John G. Barthell, died on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Ocean Grove, N. J. The follow obituary is clipped from an Ocean Grove paper: - (Same excerpt as quoted above).

Mr. Barthell was a resident of Decorah from 1876 until about two years ago when he went to make his home at Ocean Grove.
