Shelby J. Mundt

Shelby J. Mundt, 64, of Waukon died Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Shelby had made arrangements with the Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa to assist the family. A get-together celebration of her life will be held in early spring.

Shelby was born April 2, 1944 in Decorah, the daughter of Leslie and Leora Bloxham Mundt. After graduating from South Winneshiek School in 1961, Shelby went on to Winona State College, where she earned a B.S. in Elementary Education and received a Library and Audio Visual Certificate. Shelby worked as an elementary teacher at Preston and Stewartville, MN before taking the position for eight years as the elementary librarian at Stewartville. She then went on to own the Mundt Grocery Store in Zumbro Falls, MN for a few years.

She moved to Castalia and worked in the post office for 20 years and then moved to Waukon in 2003 and worked for the Isle of Capri in Marquette until her retirement in 2006. She joyfully filled her retirement with a lot of hours in her volunteer work with the Depot Outlet in Decorah.

Shelby was mayor of Castalia for 22 years and was in the Hall of Fame for the Postville Women's Bowling Association. Shelby was an avid Hawkeye and Viking fan. She enjoyed golfing, keeping the family history up to date, and spending time with family members, especially her nieces and nephews and their children.

Survivors include her three brothers, Donald (Joyce) Mundt of Danbury, CT, her twin Kelly (Ruth) Mundt of Prairie du Chien, WI, and Craig (Linda) Mundt of Ossian; three nieces; three nephews; four great-nephews; two great-nieces; and one step great-niece. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and a great-niece.

Memorials may be sent to her brother, Kelly, at 1411 South 14th Street in Prairie du Chien, WI 53821 and he will disperse them as requested to either the Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, the South Winneshiek Dollars for Scholars, Calmar, or the Depot Outlet, Decorah.
