Sarah Sophia Miller

Sarah Sophia Miller, daughter of Oscar and Lydia Miller, was born April 22, 1872, in Burr Oak township, Winneshiek county, and passed away June 3, 1955, in Decorah, at the age of 83 years, one month and 12 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Letta, (Mrs. Romeo Padden) and a brother, Charles Miller. Surviving are one sister, Anna (Mrs. Philip Brouillet), five nieces and four nephews.

Miss Miller spent most of her life in Frankville, until March 15, 1951 when she suffered a stroke and became an invalid. She was cared for since that time at the home of her nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brouillet near Frankville, until recently, when her condition became such that it was necessary to remove her to the Aswegan Home in Decorah where she passed away.

Sarah Miller entered the teaching profession at an early age and continued teaching rural schools in Winneshiek county and Frankville 34 years. Her education was received in the local schools, she later attended Valder college in Decorah, Normal school in Nora Springs and I. S. T. C. in Cedar Falls. She was a tireless teacher, in addition to the regular curriculum, knowing that only a small percentage of her pupils would have the opportunity to further education, she spent some time during the winter months, teaching the older students some of the high school subjects.

Sarah Miller became a member of the Frankville Methodist Church when a young girl. Many years were spent as a Sunday School teacher and Bible School teacher. During her later years she taught the adult Sunday School class in the Frankville Community Church.

Besides there church activities, Miss Miller was a member of the Willing Workers Society, a charter member of the Study Club and an active member of the W. C. T. U. organization for over 30 years. In 1937 she served as a delegate to the National W. C. T. U. convention held in Washington, D. C.
