Mary A. Garden
Miss Mary A. Garden, 68, died Friday afternoon at Nordness after a heart attack. She had been in ill health for about two weeks.Funeral services will be held Wednesday from the home and at 1 P.M. from the Washington Prairie Church. The Rev. O. Sandbach will officiate.
Miss Mary A. Garden was born April 15, 1867 at Nordness, the daughter of Halvor and Isabelle Garden. After acquiring an early education in the rural schools of Winneshiek county, she continued her education by attending Breckenridge Business college of Decorah. From this institution she was graduated. After graduation she taught school in this county – a task which she kept at for 25 years.
She was a member of the Washington Prairie Norwegian Methodist church – a church which her parents were founders and charter members. This church was the first Norwegian Methodist church west of the Mississippi river.
After retiring from teaching school, Miss Garden lived with her brother. She is survived by two brothers and two sisters: E. L. Garden of Souris, N. D.; Ben Garden at home; Mrs. Anna Haugen of Landa, N. D., and Mrs. Emma Bervig of Souris, N. D.
With the exception of about a year and a half when she homesteaded in the west, Miss Garden lived in Winneshiek county.
The deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved ones.
