Lorraine Monroe

Lorraine Monroe, of Castalia, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2008, at her home on Centennial Road, north of Castalia. She was 77.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 10, at the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, with the Reverend Dave L. Lenth officiating. Special music was provided by Marlys Hager, organist and Larry Johanson, soloist. Casket bearers were Matthew Buddenberg, Ron Thompson, Jeff Frederick, Doug Buddenberg, Tim Hanson, and Brian Monroe. Honorary casket bearers were Davis and Harriet Buddenberg, Herman and Carolyn Flaskerud, Eric and Lucille Flaskerud, Dorothy Halverson, Lottie Serfling, Neil and Bonnie Sanderman, and John and Gail Frederick. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Castalia. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Lorraine Marjorie (Lauer) Monroe was born February 13, 1931, in Oelwein, to Fritz and Melvina (Nelson) Lauer. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Eldorado. She attended Dover School No. 1 and Dover Center near the home of her parents, rural West Union. She graduated from the West Union High School in 1949. Lorraine began working at the First National Bank in West Union.

On April 18, 1950, Lorraine was married to Henry James Monroe, Jr. in Eldorado. The couple farmed their entire life on the Monroe family century farm north of Castalia. Lorraine became active at the United Methodist Church in Castalia, serving as church treasurer, President of the U. M. Women and in several other offices as well. She was a Thursday Club member and a member of the Farm Bureau.

Lorraine and Henry enjoyed traveling in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They also liked going to sales and working with consignment stores, dancing and being with their friends and families.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Fritz and Melvina, a brother-in-law, Ed (Virginia) Monroe, and six nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her husband, Henry; a sister, JoAnn (Forrest) Monroe, Osterdock; a brother-in-law, James (Marge) Monroe, West Union; many nieces and nephews and their special extended family, Doug (Pam) Buddenberg, Blake Buddenberg, Brittany (Justin) Heins, and Bridget (Matt) Lechtenberg; and John (Gail) Frederick, Jeff (Kathy) Frederick, Shari (David) Duncan, and Robin Helgerson.
