Cornell Riveland, well known retired Luana banker, died October 20 at the Ossian hospice where had resided for the last year. He was 89 years old.
Funeral services were conducted October 23 in the Ossian Lutheran Church by the Rev. A. Duane Manson. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery with the following men serving as pallbearers: Dirk Amundsen of Ossian, Gary Soreide and Larry Riveland, both of Iowa City, Chase Riveland of Madison, Wis., all grandsons, and Ole Hendrickson of Ossian, and Carl Bundrick of Luana.

Cornell Riveland was born Sept. 10, 1884, near Ossian, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ole O. Riveland. He obtained an education by attending the rural school near his home and Valders Business College at Decorah. For a short time he worked in the bank at Lime Springs, then returned to Ossian where he worked for many years as cashier of the Ossian State Bank.
On Aug. 25, 1909, he married Miss Agnes Theodora Bakken. The ceremony was performed at St. Ansgar by the late Rev. K. O. Eidahl.
They became the parents of one son and two daughters, who survive. They are Adrian Riveland of Luana, Rosalind (Mrs. Don Amundsen) of Ossian and Mrs. Laura Marie Soreide of Cedar Rapids. Another son, Thorman Oliver, died in infancy.
Also surviving are six grandchildren and three sisters: Mrs. Thone Rolfsen of Hettinger, N. Dak., Mrs. Alma Elleson of Clinton and Mrs. Josie Lee of Burbank, Calif. There also are three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Riveland preceded her husband in death on Aug. 30, 1947.
At one time Mr. Riveland was associated with the late Halvor Hauge in the operation of a general merchandise store at Ossian. During the depression years in the mid 30's he was head appraiser in northeast Iowa for the Regional Agricultural Credit Association which saved many farmers and business men from bankruptcy.
For nine years he was cashier and director of the Luana Savings Bank and at the time of his death was an honorary director.
Mr. Riveland was a member of the Ossian Lutheran Church. He was the last living charter member of the church, which he helped establish in 1909.
