Funeral services for Curtis Duane Monroe, 80, of Ossian were Saturday, July 15, 2006 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Ossian. Officiating was Msgr. Cletus J. Hawes. Visitation was at Schmitz Funeral Home. Interment was at St. Francis Cemetery, Ossian. Casket Bearers were Michael Macal, Brigid Monroe, Morrie Monroe, Jeramy Monroe, Zachary Monroe and Cory Monroe. Honorary Bearers were Jenni Macal, Mindy Stoerp, Molly Holthaus, Tami Egeland, Carly Monroe, Brittany Monroe and Mandy Start.
Curtis died Wednesday, July 12, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.
Curtis Duane Monroe was born on November 12, 1925 at Castalia, the son of Clark and Mari (Land) Monroe. He attended school in Castalia and enlisted in the U.S. Navy on October 20, 1943 in Decorah. He served as a Gunner's Mate Third Class and was discharged on April 22, 1946 in Minneapolis, Minn. Following his return home, he was a carpet and ceramic tile installer working for the Schmitz Furniture Store. He then farmed and occasionally did more installing of floor goods and tile.
On May 8, 1950 he was united in marriage to Marie Zweibohmer at St. Francis de Sales Church in Ossian. They were the parents of six children. Curtis was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church and the Rosary Society. He enjoyed reading any book he could pick up and he loved to relax with a fishing pole in a Minnesota lake. T.V. was one of his enjoyable things to do as he had gotten older, and the remote was one of his favorite toys. He really loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; one daughter, Karen (David) Macal of Ridgeway, IA; five sons: Larry (Sharon) of Maplewood, Minn., Dale (Marcia) of Ossian, Denis (Tina) of Clermont, Keith (Quettie) of Shelby, and Ron (special friend Jen Kouba) of Decorah; 15 grandchildren: Michael (Mel) Macal, Jenni (special friend, Jerry Shaw) Macal, Brigid Monroe, Morrie Monroe, Mindy (Ray) Stoerp, Molly (Ryan) Holthaus, Jeramy (fiancé, Tami Egeland) Monroe, Zachary Monroe, Carly Monroe, Mandy (Jim) Start, Cory (special friend, Tabitha and her daughter Justice) Monroe, Brittany Monroe, Shawn (Tina) Sulley, Jamie (Jeff) Clayton, and John Schreiber; eight great grandchildren: Jessica, Justine, and Jennie Knutson, Jeron Shaw, Shawn Jr, Shawna and Shane Sulley, and Dylan Start; four brothers: Bernold of Postville, Virgil of Ossian, Forrest (JoAnn) of Guttenberg, and Fielden (Harriet) of Fredericksberg; two sisters: Rose Keller of Phoenix, AZ and Marlene Schissel of Prairie du Chien, Wis. and a special god child, Michele Graap. Also surviving are brothers and sisters in-law: Pat Zweibohmer, Corrine (Ralph) Lensing, Norbert "Buck" Zweibohmer, Leonard (Eunice) Zweibohmer and Shirley Monroe; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Alvin and Carroll Monroe and one sister, Bernita Heins; brothers and sisters in-law: Marjorie Monroe, Lois Monroe, Delores Monroe, Glen Heins, Art Zweibohmer, Claus and Marcie Hinders and Francis Zweibohmer.
