Funeral services for Kenneth Leo Schroeder were held Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, Iowa. The Reverend Christopher Staley officiated. Marlys Hager was the organist. Casket Bearers were: Jason and Cindy Lechtenberg, Kiley and Nick Stineman, Sarah Schroeder, Emily Schroeder, Terry Szabo, and Loren Ihde. Honorary Casket Bearers: Merle Monroe, Nanferd Meyer, and Leon Everman. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
Kenneth Leo Schroeder was born February 23, 1926, on the family farm in Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County, south of Castalia, Iowa, to Arthur W. Schroeder and Elizabeth Ann (Schweinefus) Schroeder. He passed away Saturday, June 24, 2006, in the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin, at the age of 80 years, 4 months, and 3 days.
He was baptized March 28, 1926 and confirmed August 27, 1939, both in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, IA. Kenny attended the Mundt Country School. At the age of 16, he began hauling cream.
On November 1, 1955 Kenneth was married to Jeanette Ihde at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. To this union four children were born. They farmed west of Castalia. In the early years, Kenneth would haul their own milk to the Carnation Milk Plant in Castalia. After many years of farming, they retired and moved into Castalia.
Among Kenneth’s many interests included the buying and selling of heifers and trucking corn during the fall harvest. He enjoyed drives to check the progress of the local crops and Sunday trips to eat dinner out. Kenneth drove his Super C Farmall tractor in the Castalia Tractor Days Parade every year except in 2004 when he and Jeanette were honored as the Grand Marshalls of the parade. He also enjoyed playing cards and was a regular member of the "First Chance Coffee Club."
Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Jeanette; four children, Jackie (Ron) Lechtenberg, Postville, Leo (Brenda) Schroeder, Castalia, Colleen (Al) Meyer, Scottsdale, AZ, and Kendra (Craig) Frey, Gilbert, AZ; eight grandchildren, Jason (Cindy) Lechtenberg, Kiley (Nick) Stineman, Sarah Schroeder, Emily Schroeder, Carlee Meyer, Lindsey Meyer, Olivia Frey, Benjamin Frey, and a sister, Betty Szabo, and a nephew, Terry Szabo.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Brent Richard Schroeder, one niece, Lori Szabo and one nephew, Lonnie Szabo, and a brother-in-law, William (Bill) Szabo.
Kenneth was a life time member of the Zion Lutheran Church and served a term on the Church Council.
