Harold Preuss, 78, Castalia

Funeral services for Harold Preuss, 78, were Friday, June 2, 2006 at 11 a.m., Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia. Casket Bearers were: Shawn Tessmer, Joe Tessmer, Brad Herman, Matt Herman, Steve Johanningmeier, and Tyler Osborn. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia. Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service handled arrangements.

Harold John Preuss was born near Ossian, March 21, 1928 to Edward and Florence (Schroeder) Preuss. He died Tuesday, May 30, at his home near Castalia, after a long battle with cardiac disease.

Harold grew up in rural Northeast Iowa. He attended Castalia Public School through the eighth grade, foregoing further education to assist his parents in supporting the family.

He married Nell Wille September 8, 1952. The couple farmed together in rural Castalia until his health deteriorated. His eldest son, Lee, bought the family farm in 1993 and has kept Harold's legacy alive.

Harold was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. He enjoyed playing cards and reading, especially Louis L'Amour. He was always full of good advice. If one of his children or grandchildren got hurt he told them he could "nail a board over it."

Survivors include his wife, Nell; two sons, Lee Preuss, Castalia, Dennis (Ann) Preuss, Dunkerton; 8 daughters, Jeanne (Butch) Tessmer, Elgin; Donna (Dan) Hague, Davenport; Lynn (Stanley) Staats, Wapello; Laurie (James) Herman, Elkport;, Peggy (Daniel) Osborn, Janesville; Kathy (William) Wagner, Elgin; Sheila (Robert) Burgin, Elgin; and Jo (Darren) Larson, McGregor; grandchildren, Shawn Tessmer, Paula (Tessmer) Carlson, Joe Tessmer, Lisa Herman, Brad Herman, Matt Herman, Brooke and Tara Hague, Steve, Brittany and Heather Johanningmeier, Jennifer and Nicholas Leckey, Tyler and Callie Osborn, Ashley, Tessa and Michael Burgin, Cody, Christopher and Derek Larson. Also surviving are five great grandchildren; two sisters, Ramona Svendsen, Ossian, Wanda McNally, Luana, and a brother-in-law, Merle Monroe, Castalia.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Major Beth Leckey, his parents, and a sister, Juanita Monroe.
