A surprise that was a surprise took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Maltby on the afternoon of the 22nd, it being the forty-first anniversary of their wedding, “H. H.” has grave doubts of being able to do the occasion justice so soon after its occurrence, as time is needed for the digestion of the theme, or of the more than bountiful repast that the ladies had provided. However, there were nearly a hundred neighbors and friends present, all bent on having and giving just as much enjoyment as possible. As a prelude to the dinner Rev. Wm. Cummings, on behalf of the company, presented Mr. and Mrs. Maltby with five pieces of beautiful silverware. Your correspondent heard neither the presentation speech nor the response, but he has no question that they were models as regards both pith and point. Aside from Hesper people there were those present from LaCrosse, Decorah, Mabel, Canoe and Burr Oak. The only unsuccessful feature of the event was the effort to get rid of all the good things with which the tables were loaded. Comrade and Mrs. Maltby say “Come again,” and all who were there feel like accepting the invitation.
