Pastor Claire Street and Wife Killed in Car-truck Crash
Pastor Claire Street, 48, and his wife, Julie, 38, of Hesper (Iowa) were killed in a car-truck crash Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 5 p.m. The accident took place at the intersection of Highways 102 and 150, about 14 miles north of Vinton, Iowa.
According to the Benton County Sheriff's office, Pastor Street, who was heading north on Highway 101, ran a stop sign and the car was hit almost head on by a semi-truck, southbound on Highway 150. Mark Uchytil, 29, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, driver of the semi, owned by Nash Finch, Cedar Rapids, was not injured.
The Strets were en route home ater attending a pastor short course session in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The car was termed a total loss. Damage to the semi was estimated at $15,000. The accident was investigated by the Iowa State Patrol and the Benton County Sheriff's office.
The Streets were graduates of Penn College at Oskaloosa, Iowa. They were married June 24, 1972. Mr. Street was born Dec. 17, 1923, in Ware, Iowa, the son of Guildford and Iva Street. For the past five years, he had served as pastor of the Hesper Friends church.
He is survived by his father of Hesper and one brother, Keith of Wapello, Iowa. His mother preceded him in death.Mrs. Street was born Aug. 31, 1940, the daughter of Willard and Florence Carter. At the time of her death she was teaching at the Baptist Academy in Decorah, Iowa. She is survived by her parents of Valton, Wis., and one sister, Mrs. Ernest (Barbara) Nemee, rural Dorchester, Iowa.
Joint funeral services were conducted Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Hesper Friends Church. Mahlon Macy of Oskaloosa, District Superintendent of the Iowa Yearly Meeting of the Friends Church, officiated. Burial was in Hesper Public Cemetery. The Mengis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
