PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941
Mike Fulghum came to Hesper in the year 1857, and resided here for 16 years. In the Fulghum family there were ten children, all of whom realized all the conditions of the pioneer days. The Fulghum family and Hamlin Garland's parents were very close friends as long as the Garlands lived in Iowa. Sylvanus M. Fulghum, a son of Mike Fulghum, was born in Boone county, Indiana and came to Hesper when but a child. He went to Cerro Gordo county, Iowa and worked as a well driller and while drilling a well on the farm west of Mason City, he met his death.
