PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Corydon O. Maltby was born May 15, 1838, in New York. Mary Gilbert was born in 1840 in Pennsylvania. He removed with his parents to Lake county, Illinois. Here he married Mary Gilbert. In 1862 he enlisted in Company F, 27th Illinois Volunteer Infantry for service in the Civil War. He took part in many of the important engagements of the war and was mustered out of service with an honorable discharge at the close of hostilities. He then took his young wife and came to Iowa, first settling in Allamakee county. He came to Winneshiek county some time after settling in Canoe township, then on to Hesper township where he became an extensive land owner, acquiring three hundred and twenty acres of land. He held various offices of the township, serving for two terms as a member of the board of supervisors. He belonged to the Grand Army post at Decorah. He and his wife were given two children: Fannie Ruth, who married Milton Whitney. Frank Gilbert, their son, now deceased, acquired land in Section 17, Hesper township. He was united in the holy wedlock to Adella Bennett, a native of Wisconsin. They were parents of a daughter, Ruth. Adella Bennett Maltby passed away and Frank remarried to Ollie Blagsvedt, who at this time resides in Decorah.
