PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

William R. Van Vliet was born near Quebec, near the New York state line. In the year 1876 he came with his family to Hesper township. Here he became an extensive land owner, acquiring two hundred acres, on hundred and sixty in Section 32, Hesper township and forty acres in Section 5, Canoe township. The property he held until he moved to the state of Montana. Mary A. Scriver, his wife, was a native of Odelltown, Quebec, being born there on the 20th of October, 1839. In this family were five children: Ida May, Fred, Alexander, E. H. and W. A. who now lives on the farm that his father settled on. He has in his possission a record of the Van Vliets in America showing the representatives of the line came from Holland in 1635, and settled in Dutchess county, New York, whence they moved to the Canada frontier in 1800.
