PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941
Elias M. Carter was born May 10, 1843, in Brimfield, Ohio, the son of Horatio L. and Julie Carter. He received his education in the public schools and then attended the Hiram College. At the time he attended the college, a former president of the United Staes was its president, James A. Garfield. When the war of the rebellion broke out he enlisted in Co. B. 85th Ohio Volunteer Infantry but was mustered out of service due to sickness. After he recovered from his illness, he again enlisted in the army, this time in Co. F. 184th Ohio Infantry and served until the close of the war. Soon after he came to Iowa and settled in Winneshiek county, where his father owned some land. On the 4th day of November, 1869, he married Margaret Cameron, of Hesper, her parents being natives of Scotland. Mr. Carter, being a very well edicated man, held many offices in Hesper township. For nearly thiry years he served as Notary Public. He was for many years the Hesper correspondent for the Decorah Republican. Mrs. Carter was an early school teacher in the village and was the first president of the Century Club. They were parents of three daughters: Dora, who is a teacher in the Upper Iowa University at Fayette, and Mrs. Fred Baker. One daughter, Edna has passed away.
