PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

John Fawcett and his wife, the former Phoebe Painter, came to Winneshiek county from Indiana in the year 1857 with their four children. They made the journey in a covered wagon. After arriving here they took up a claim on the Highland and Hesper township line, where they lived for 55 years; they owned land both in Hesper and Highland townships. Their children were: Isaac, Granville, Carrie Tavener, Rebecca White, Ella Chase, and Mary Mitchell. All these are now dead and there remains but one daughter, Allice Cutting of Oregon. They all were birthright members of the Friends.
