PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Andrew Nelson was born in Norway in 1829, and was a farm laborer. He came to America in the year 1854 and settled in Lisbon, Ill., where he lived for one year. He then came to Winneshiek county, buying land one mile east of Hesper in Section 14, Hesper township. He built a large stone barn and house, there being four very fine quarries on his farm, from which he obtained material. He also built a stone wall around his farm, which is today still standing on the farm Carl Anderson resides on. In 1857 he was married to Anna Nicholson and they were parents of eight children.
