PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

John McMillen was born in Ireland, but was of Scotch descent. He came to the United States and settled in New York, where he married Ann Mitchell. They were the parents of three children, Robert, Jane Hallock, and James. They moved from New York to Michigan, where they resided four years, then going to Woodstock, Ill., and came to Hesper township June 1, 1852. He bought 740 acres of land from the government. Of this amount 640 acres was for himself and the rest for another family. The farm where his great grandson, Chsrley McMillen, lives was the chosen spot to build.
