CALKIN, FINNEY

PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Daniel Calkin was from Essex County, New York, where he was born in 1837. He went to Vermont in 1859 and learned the trade of a carpenter and joiner. In 1861 he enlisted in the 5th Vermont Infantry, Co. F., on the second call after the Battle of Bull Run, serving for three years. Two years of the time he was a hospital steward, as he was unable to serve in the field on account of serious illness during the first. In 1866 he came to Winneshiek County, first locating in Canoe township, where he resided until 1871, when he purchased a farm in Section 30, Hesper township. In 1876 he purchased 100 acres of tillable land in Section 20, Hesper township and also 20 acres of timber in Burr Oak township. He held varous offices of trust in Hesper township. In 1868 at Postville, he married Esther M. Finney.
